Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16)

Paul the Apostle of Christ Jesus, in the sixth chapter of his letter to the church at Ephesus, describes faith as an armory that must be carried about in the Christian walk. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:16. KJV.

His letter depicts faith as a spiritual protective that must be put on at all times throughout the Christian adventure. It also signifies that faith is the greatest armory any believer can put on “Above All”. It simply tells that faith stands out of the entire spiritual weapon mentioned in the previous verses. We can also see from the scripture above that this spiritual weaponry helps us stand and remain unshakable in Christ.

The truth is, we can’t fully understand the message Apostle Paul was trying to pass across to the believers until we really understand what faith means. To comprehend his message we must take a side journey into finding out what faith means and why it was described as a shield to the believer.

Without a glimpse into the scriptures, we cannot really produce a satisfactory definition to faith especially as it relates with the Christian walk.
The eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews gives us a clear definition of what faith is. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1. KJV.
So you can see that faith is vividly a spiritual force. It is walking in the reality of the desired outcome. It is a consciousness that must be activated and lived by. It is not a force that is seen but an awareness that births for you your reality.it is the evidence of things not seen that’s why it is described as an evidence. It is a tangible spiritual force that births for you physical proofs.

A shield is anything which protects or defends you from attacks; it is something that provides you shelter in the time of war. It is something that gives you refuge. It was commonly used in wars in the old Roman Empire so as to protect one’s self from the sword and arrows of the enemies.

The shield of faith is a part of God’s armour as seen in the book of Ephesians 6:10-17 . Seeing faith as a spiritual force and shield as a physical phenomenon, Paul was only trying to tell the church at Ephesus that the force of faith is as equal to carrying a shield about as a soldier in the battlefront.

In the old Roman armies, nobody goes to battle without his physical protective. So as a Christian, Apostle Paul makes us understand that we are engaged in a spiritual battle, and having mentioned all the weapons made available to us in that chapter, he pointed keenly to the most important thing responsible for our safety and defense which is faith. He understood that when you’re too battle conscious and forget about your defense you may end up losing such battle. So he said, “Above All”. Faith is above all. It will not just help you start the battle, it will keep you through the battle.
